I had to pad the length of this review... just like the movie did. I will not explain the plot to The Grinch to you. It has Benedict Cumberbatch, though.
So here it is, my review: it's fine. It's just fine. I didn't hate it, I didn't like it. The issue with this film is that this story works on a 30 minute run time, but when you try and stretch that concept to, literally, just barely 80 minutes, there is lots and lots of filler. It's like eating a cake that 85% frosting. It tastes bad. But at 80 minutes, it's way too long and I found myself really bored and falling asleep mainly because I've seen this story before and I know how it will end.
It became boring because there are just scenes that are filler and are there to stretch the run time. And after a few minutes of it, I got bored. Like there is a whole 10 minutes dedicated to the Grinch finding a reindeer, and he sort of does, but that "reindeer" was there simply for comedy then isn't useful after that. So that entire 10-15 minutes is useless.
The animation looked good. And that's really the only positive. Other than Max, who was adorable.
Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch wasn't that good either and it's the script's fault. There are scenes where the Grinch actually does something genuinely nice and acts really optimistic and full of energy, but that's not the Grinch. I understand that it's meant for kids, but that just makes it a really broad animated comedy where the Grinch happens to be in it, thus not making the story of The Grinch interesting.
I would actually skip this one, the Jim Carrey one and the cartoon are superior and this does nothing new or interesting in the lockstep story of the Grinch.
