Overlord

“Three months ago, I was cutting grass on my front yard. The mailman shows up with a letter from the army. Now I'm here, and no idea where I'm going to end up.”

Overlord is a Bad Robot Film (JJ Abrams' production company) directed by a guy they grabbed off the street and is about a rag-tag group of soldiers right before the Invasion of Normandy in WWII. Their mission is to destroy a clock tower before 6am so that the ground troops can have air support during the Invasion of Normandy.

I wasn't sure whether to keep the review vague or not because I feel that this is a really good movie to walk into blind with no marketing or information at all, like Alien. But what I will say in my review was already spoiled by trailers.

This film was rumored to be the 4th film in the Cloverfield series, but due to the embarrassment that was The Cloverfield Paradox, this film was not violated by JJ Abrams.

But this film is so refreshing. It feels like it's been forever since I saw a movie where I was invested in the story and characters. Trust me, it's rarely like that. But this film does such an excellent job at presenting itself as a war film, but goes into some unfamiliar territory later on when we discover that this film offers Nazi Zombies (The thing I didn't want to spoil that was marketed heavily). Throughout the soldier's mission, they discover that the Nazis are making zombies as well. And I have to say, for such a dumb premise, it was flawlessly done.

I am shocked at how good this film was. The thing is, a movie like this should not work. A film like this should be a disaster. But the film takes this premise seriously to the point where Saving Private Ryan met Nazi Zombies. It was incredible. The pacing was absolutely perfect, as well as the screenplay, which didn't feel like a total hack job. What was also shocking was how restrained this film felt. There isn't an actual "action scene" until the last 15 minutes of the film and it builds so well that it feels like the audience is being awarded for their patience. It was like a movie!

The movie also has a lot of gore and body horror which was a lot of fun. As well as the action that was hilarious and over the top at times. Kurt Russell's son is also in this and he did a great job as well as Jovan Apedo who is a terrific protagonist.

Please go see this film!!
