Terminator Genisys
/“I look at each of you and I see the marks of this long and terrible war. If we die tonight, man kind dies with us.”
Filmology Rating: 3 out of 4
I can't believe I'm overall positive about this film. Does it have to do with the fact I saw The Terminator on the big screen an hour before seeing this? I will say that it helped a lot. Does it have anything to do with the fact that I got a free T-shirt at my screening? No but I will now proudly wear my shirt instead of shoving it in the closet like I had feared before the film started.
Over the years my love for the first Terminator films has grown but after visiting Universal Orlando last summer I thought my love was gone after watching the Terminator 3D show. I didn't care for it, in fact I was rather bored. But then I saw the trailer for Genisys and was left in state of wonder. I love time travel and any form of media that creates alternate time lines. I had no idea who Emilia Clarke was, I dreaded seeing Jai Courtney in another movie, and of course I was excited to see Arnold Schwarzenegger back in the role that made him famous. I had excitement building for a series I thought had died and then I saw the next trailer and my heart sank.
John Connor, played by an actor who I like, Jason Clarke, was a terminator. Now it wasn't the fact that he decided to be a machine or whatever the circumstances the caused him to become a terminator that bothered me. It was the fact that this was revealed in a trailer. Most of the time I avoid trailers but I decided to let my excitement for the film to build and what a mistake that was. However even if I didn't watch the trailer I do see posters everytime I enter the theatre and John Connor is on the center of the poster in half human, half terminator form. I hated that I knew what a big twist in the movie was going to be and the marketing team behind the movie didn't seem to care.
The movie itself is very fun. I laughed at the jokes, while the action isn't memorable it's still fun, and I'm excited to see what happens next. This film made me excited to check out Game of Thrones to see Emilia Clarke work with actual actors instead of pieces of wood like Courtney. This by no sense of the imagination is Courtney's worst film performance but I still rather seen an actor who can have facial expression act. I feel like Courtney never got the part he wanted in his high school play and is still bitter about it. Arnold was actually fun to see again after hating his appearances in The Expendables films.
I had a huge smile on my face with the time travel aspects of the film. Some people might say the film is trying too hard but I rather have a film that does everything it can to justify the use of time travel to me. While I still have some questions the film doesn't answer I left feeling satisfied with my Terminator experience.
