Crazy Rich Asians
/“God forbid we lose the ancient Chinese tradition of guilting your children.”
Filmology Rating: 3.17 out of 4
Crazy Rich Asians directed by Jon Chu who Directed such hit films as: Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. This time he brings you something that isn't a dumpster fire; as Rachel Chu accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. She's also surprised to learn that Nick's family is extremely wealthy and he's considered one of the country's most eligible bachelors. Rachel must deal with family, wealth, and Nick's mother.
This film itself makes its own news as it is one of the first Hollwood released movies to be of an Asian cast since the 90s. However, just because it is diverse, does not make it perfect (Black Panther). The film is a typical romantic comedy and feels so at first. I found that the film is difficult to get into in the first half because the film asks you to relate to these ridiculously wealthy people like they were average human beings. There were also times in the film where I was very bored. However, in the second half, the film became more personal and I found myself latched onto the characters.
The characters themselves is what makes this film unique due to the vast amount of personalities in the film. Awkwafina seems to be a highlight in most reviews and she certainly did have her moments due to her comedic character. The mother is also a stand out because she is the type of mom that does "inspection" on the person you bring home and she can be quite intimidating.
But the film is gorgeous looking and that can mostly be attributed to the fact that these people are ridiculously rich, so there are neat locations on display and a wide assortment of different foods.
I think the main point to take from this film is that, it's not just a good film but because it is making money, Hollywood is all of the sudden interested in films that focus on niche markets (Black Panther, Deadpool). Don't be surprised to see more risks in the future, like this one.
