Captain Phillips
/"I'm the captain now."
Filmology Rating: 3.5 out of 4
Captain Phillips stars Tom Hanks as Captain Rich Phillips, who is on a routine trip along the Horn of Africa. His ship is full of a crew he is unfamiliar with, but who pull through when needed. The ship is stalked and boarded by Somali pirates, leading to some of the best acting I’ve seen from Hanks in a long time. Hanks becomes Phillips, instead of giving a Hanks performance of Phillips, which made the film much more believable. There are connections formed between the audience and the pirates, and an attempt to connect the audience to Phillips and his wife, which falls a bit short for me. The action scenes are appropriately timed, not lasting too long or cutting too quickly. The emotional scenes tug in the right places and let you feel on your own when needed. Overall a great capture of the first pirate capture of an American ship in over 200 years.
