An Irish Immigrant named Eilis arrives in Brooklyn New York in the 1950s. Life for her is very difficult because this is the first time being away from home and her family. She is at the point where she thinks about giving up and moving back home and leaving the American dream behind her… that is until she meets Tony. Tony is an Italian plumber and they soon fall very much in love. Her life seems to be going in the right direction but then unexpected events force her to return home for a short period of time. Now the battle for her is whether or not she should return to Brooklyn and Tony, or stay in Ireland. Her family, a new job, a new possible romance, all seem to be pulling at her and not wanting to let her go back. I just have to say that Brooklyn is a fantastic movie and that I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would! To be honest, I was expecting this movie to be Oscar bait based off of some of the reviews that I read but that was not the case at all. This movie was extremely well done in the way that it was shot, directed, cinematically beautiful to look at, and acted extremely well. Nothing felt forced and everything just flowed together beautifully. This movie deserves to be in the running for many Oscar categories. Saoirse Ronan, who played Eilis, was extraordinary and really showed that she has a lot of talent to offer. I very much look forward to seeing what else she will do in the future. Anyway, she sold her character very well and she makes the audience really care about the choice that she will make at the end of the film. She completely sucks you in and makes you emotional invested in her life and her well-being. Her acting is complemented by Emory Cohen (Tony) who did a fantastic job, along with Domhnall Gleeson later on in the film. Plot wise, this movie doesn’t stand out because you can find similar plots in tons of movies. However, the writing was spot on and brought forth emotion, drama, and humor, and because of this makes the film stand out from all the other similar movies you could find. I very much enjoyed this movie and would highly recommend it; it would especially make for a good date movie.
