The Danish Girl

"I've only liked a handful of people in my life, and you've been two of them."

The Danish Girl is about the relationship between Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. This movie dives into Lili and Gerda's marriage and how it changes and molds over time as they go through Lili's groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer. Set in the 1920s in Copenhagen, Lili was born Einar Wegener but never truly felt right in his own body. For his whole life, he never felt right and felt different but he never know why. This was until his wife painted him as a woman that he started to understand that he was never mean to be born a man but was rather he felt trapped being a man. He then went on a journey that led to him being one of the first identifiable recipients of sex reassignment surgery. One thing that is very well done about this movie is the raw emotion throughout. Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne both do an excellent job, especially Vikander. Both of them go through such a struggle in this movie; one feeling trapped in his own body and then going through process to become a woman, and the other being married to a man that she loves who is slowly not a man anymore. Both actors do an extremely good job at showing these difficult emotions and the turmoil that both people are going through. This aspect of the film is by far the most enjoyable thing to watch and both of these actors deserve the Golden Globe and possible Oscar nominations they have or will received. Having mentioned the Oscars…. One of my biggest flaws about this movie is how it is complete Oscar bait. Not specifically the story they were covering, but because of some of the shots, the way it was filmed, and the emotions they try and force. I feel it felt forced at times and because of these things and it lost some intensity and emotion the film was going for. That really being my only huge fault with this movie, I very much enjoyed the movie and this movie will last as an inspiration to many people.
