Bad Moms
/"Party Like a Mother."
Filmology Rating: 3 out of 4
Amy (Mila Kunis) has had just about enough of everything ranging to work, marriage, PTA meetings and parenting. She is sick of trying to be this perfect parent and she isn’t the only one who feels this way. Amy meets and becomes friends with two other stressed-out mothers (Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn) who also want to get away from their stressful life and responsibilities. Well from now on, they aren’t going to worry about doing everything perfectly anymore and are finally going to let out all their built up stress and live a little. However, the other “perfect” PTA moms led by Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate) aren’t in favor of Amy’s decisions and defiance of their PTA way and are off to make Amy pay.
Bad Moms, written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore who are best known for the movie the Hangover, haven’t really wrote anything amazing as of late. I went into this movie thinking that it would have a few laughs and an ok story but I was sure wrong. This was one of the funniest movies that I have seen in a very long time! I'm talking burst out laughing and some side splitting humor! I was very surprised at the amount of humor that was filled into this movie. A little warning though, a lot of raunchy humor throughout so if that’s a turn off for you, then I don’t think this movie is for you. So Jon and Scott, I really got to give you guys some props on this one. You guys nailed this script, keep making stuff like this please because this was great.
One of the biggest reasons that this movie was hysterical is the fantastic cast that it has. Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell were both great but it was Kathryn Hahn that really steels the show. She was always funny and used so much more than just the dialogue to be funny. He style, her body language, her facial expressions and so much more added up to her being extremely funny. These three ladies had a fantastic chemistry throughout and you could tell that they were having a ton of fun! Adding to the mix of these three actresses was a bunch of other talent that all worked really well with one another. I really don’t think there was a bad character which again goes to show the really great writing all around.
I feel that as hilarious as this movie was for me, it would be funnier for all you moms out there because you can relate to this film in a way that I just can’t. There were several moms in the theater that were laughing so loud and stomping their feet because they couldn’t contain their laughter. And then counter to all the laughter was a more serious theme to the film. That mothers (and parents in general) try so hard to be perfect and do everything right but that is just impossible. You are going to mess up, going to feel overworked, and that it is ok to not feel ok and perfect all the time! Parenting is a learning process and you may never get it right but that’s ok!
I felt like this movie tried to bring home a certain message and do it in a funny way and it really did a fantastic job of doing so. I had a blast with Bad Moms and I would definitely recommend if you want to see a funny movie and have a fun night laughing. So is this a fantastic movie or an Oscar quality? Oh heck no! But for what this movie was, what it tried to do, and how great of a comedy it was, I really do think this movie was fantastic.
