Baby Driver

Filmology Rating: 3.25 out of 4
Getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort), is a very talented driver that has been coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey). After meeting the woman (Lily James) of his dreams, he sees a chance to ditch his shady lifestyle and make a clean break.
Please go see this movie. “Baby Driver” is by far the best movie out in theaters right now, especially compared to what came out this weekend. This film has everything you want in it from great action, some laughs, an engaging story, fantastic actors, and wonderful writing and direction from Edgar Wright (Ant-Man, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and more). So let’s get into it!
Ansel Elgort is fantastic as Baby. He is different than what you would expect from a getaway driver and that is what makes him so fun to watch. As you find out very early in the film (and from trailers) is that he always is listening to music to drown out a constant hum/ring in his ears caused by a car accident when he was young. Not only is the music/soundtrack excellent, but the music very much defines this character and makes Baby special. At first he might seem really quirky and even cocky but just give him time, he will definitely grow on you!
Surrounding Ansel there is a stacked cast of Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Lily James, and more. Together, they create some really incredible moments. I cannot say enough good things about their performances! Apart from Ansel, Jon Hamm was my favorite character because of how dynamic he was. You see some extreme highs and then some very extreme lows. Ansel’s character Baby and Lily James’s Deborah also have a very sweet romance that progresses nicely. It doesn’t feel forced due to the excellent chemistry that they had. All around, I could not get enough of these characters!
Edgar Wright has a special flair for directing. He has an artistic quality about him that film nerds will drool over and yet he knows how to make it subdued so it’s not overpowering for the normal viewer. Time and time again I was amazed by the subtleties that he put into each scene. One specific thing to look at is during the laundromat scene; look at the washing machines in the background and notice the color. What could have been dull and dirty looking clothes were vibrant and separated colors that made the background pop. Such a simple thing and yet it made the scene so much more artistic and special. It’s these little things that make Edgar Wright so good.
Being an action movie, you want good action. Trust me, these driving sequences and chase scenes are top notch! They will have you on the edge of your seat with excitement! I won’t try and convince you any more, just go see it for yourself!
“Baby Driver” is one of the best movies of the year so far and is an absolute must see!
