Avengers: Endgame
/“You could not live with your own failure, and where did that bring you? Back to me.”
Filmology Rating: 3.5 out of 4
It's difficult to address this film as a "film." This is like rating the last chapter of a book, but grading the chapter as a book itself. So the rules of structure are basically out the window. All that's really left is the story, which is perfect for this kind of film.
This is the kind of film that can be picked apart very easily. This is one of those instances where the details do not matter. Suspend your disbelief for three hours and don't try to "find plot holes." This film can be viewed as a reward. After eleven years of post credit scenes and character building to where this entire film is your reward for waiting.
In the past, a film like "Rogue One" was frowned upon because of its crutch on fan service with no substance. "Endgame" has had years of substance to where this film is a fan service explosion; in the good way.
There is a soft spot for "Infinity War" because I love characters in misery and hopelessness. It gives plenty of dramatic momentum into the emotional character conclusions in this. My favorite is still Captain America, who has a (literally) jaw-dropping moment in this.
There is an issue with tone. After the snap, half of all life is gone. But there are funny quips and Thor slapstick. It felt incredibly juxtaposed with the events that literally just happened.
You can't compare this film to any other film in history. It's the best possible film they could have made but it's not perfect as a "film." It's perfect as a conclusion of a larger story.
There will never be another film like this again. This is what film is all about: you cheer, you cry, you clap, it inspires you, it moves you. We are in a golden age of entertainment. Enjoy it. Your move "Game of Thrones."
