Always Be My Maybe
/“The man who embraces his mediocre nothingness shines greater than any.”
Filmology Rating: 3 out of 4
Always Be My Maybe is a romantic comedy that was recently released on Netflix because comedies can't go to theaters anymore. It stars Ali Wong and Randall Park as two childhood friends who eventually part ways until they meet again later in life. Typical plot ensues... I am not the biggest fan of romantic comedies and here's why: while other genres of film can be very creative in plot, characters, setting, and tone - romantic comedies are limited to being a predictable romantic plot and being a comedy. That is why it is very tricky to do a film like this. Because if the comedy does not land, then the film flops. However, this is one of those films that succeeds.
This is an Asian-centered story, which is great because it allows for a different landscape for this genre. Sort of what 'Crazy Rich Asians' did. But the thing with comedies is that they are either funny or not. And 'Always Be My Maybe' was hilarious. The script itself brings in lots of that awkward, dry comedy.
Randall Park is so great. He was in 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' and Kim Jong-un in 'The Interview.' But he is really good at awkward comedy as well as Ali Wong who both work very well together. And, thankfully, there was not that annoying character.
There is also a surprise cameo by a big-name actor in this film that made me lose my mind. Do not look up the cast of this film. Just go in blind. However, for a good twenty minutes, this actor stole the entire movie and it was wonderful seeing him to do comedy again. He still has it!
Compared to the market of comedy films today, this is certainly a wonderful little movie. I laughed beyond twenty times and was able to look past its horribly generic plot. This is a must-see for a good laugh.
