Allegiant

"You want change without sacrifice, you want peace without struggle. The world doesn't work that way."

Filmology Rating: 1.33 out of 4

Tris (Shailene Woodley) escapes with Four (Theo James), and friends beyond the wall that encloses Chicago. For the first time, someone leaves and goes beyond the wall, city, and family. Once outside, they learn new truths from David (Jeff Daniels) and the people beyond the wall that will completely change their lives forever. Meanwhile back home in Chicago, a battle rages on between the now factionless societies. Tris and Four must now decide who to trust in order to survive, who and what to believe, who their allegiance is to, and more.

Needs to be said…. The Divergent series has been in my opinion the weakest recent teen fic series (Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and this series) and this is by far the weakest movie out of the three. With all honesty, there are very little good things to be said about Allegiant. There were a couple tender moments here and there, mostly between Tris and her brother. Miles Teller I thought was pretty good even though they only give his character a few moments to shine. (I think that he is extremely talented and I feel his talent is getting wasted in this series now) Other than those few things, Allegiant was really a terrible movie. Obviously since this is part one of the finale, they will make another one but I really wish they wouldn’t. The Divergent series is dead and should be laid to rest.

Quick little question, how many Divergent books are there? Answer: there are 3. Now how many movies will there be? Answer: there will be 4. The author only wrote 3 books for a reason! This is a perfect example of Hollywood trying to suck as much money out of a series as they possibly can. Once they saw that the much better and more popular series The Hunger Games made a two part finale, they thought they could do the same as well. Allegiant suffers from the same fate as the last two Hunger Games movies suffered from. We have a movie that feels dragged on and because of it, has very little intensity to it. I was never on the edge of my seat during the action scenes, I wasn’t engaged in any of the characters’ lives, and I lost interest soon after the movie started.

Adding on to the list of poor qualities Allegiant has, there was way too much CGI and green screens throughout the entirety of the film. Believe me I get it, some of the movie takes place in futuristic setting so CGI is needed. However, use it sparingly please! This movie at times feels so fake that it is laughable. For me it just says a lot about a studio and the amount of effort they put into the making of a film. Mad Max, an absolutely fantastic movie, portrayed a wasteland perfectly because they actually film it in Australia and in the desert and then used CGI very sparingly. For me, a lot of Allegiant just felt very low effort. Finally, onto possibly the biggest fault in this movie which is the lack of emotion. If there was a connection between Tris and Four…. Well that is gone now. No chemistry whatsoever and no emotion between the two. Sad scenes didn’t come across as sad and intense scenes fell flat on its face.

All in all, only see this movie is for some reason you really, really, really wanted to…
