Ready or Not
/“The Game Begins.”
Filmology Rating: 3.16 out of 4
Ready or Not was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Oplin and Tyler Gillett. Writing credit to Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.
Essentially, this film is 'Meet the Parents' blended with 'Get Out', but channeling more slasher elements. In order to be accepted into her new- rich family through wed, she must play a game of hide and seek. But it involves a more sinister twist. This entire film could be roped into this short summary: it's not a baggy film to watch, but rather a kinetic- joyous dark comedy.
Samara Weaving is the glue that holds a lot of the films greater elements together. She is like Laurie Strode running from Michael Meyers for almost the entire runtime. Though it got a bit tiresome at times, the film changes location and splashes enough comedy in the stew to keep the film cooking.
I've had plenty of experience with Henry Czerny from the television show, 'Revenge.' He is playing almost the same character from that show, but turned up to eleven. He helped lift a sluggish second half.
The ending of this film is everything you could ask for from a film like this. The film is already at such a level that when the climax begins, you go, "Oh, we're going THAT far!" There is half an attempt at character development and with a limping story, it does drag near the middle. This film has the same grade as 'The Dark Knight.' Am I saying the two are equals? No. They're two very different films and a grade is pretty irrelevant. It's like comparing a Hitchcock film to a Marvel film.
It's a very satirical and darkly humorous film that kept a witty, wide grin on my face that does not crutch on slasher tropes or laughs too often. It's a great ninety minutes well spent.
