Parasite
/“You know what kind of plan never fails? No plan.”
Filmology Rating: 3.75 out of 4
If you're oblivious to this film's existence, almost every critic has praised this film to such an extent that no other film seems to contest with it. Many have noted its potential to make history at the 2020 Oscars.
Parasite was directed by Bong Joon-ho, who most people may be unfamiliar with other than his film 'Snowpiercer.' It was also co-written by him as well.
All unemployed, Ki-taek and his family take peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous Parks family as they ingratiate themselves into their lives and get entangled in an unexpected incident.
Many may be turned off to such a film because it is foreign and you must read subtitles, but do not let that be a barrier for you seeing this film because the talk is true. This is one of the best films of the year.
The first half is a very well-handeled comedy that places this poor family of four in working for this rich family. Unbeknownst to the Parks family, they are all related and are simply scamming the Parks family. While the first half is flawless, enjoyable, and comedic, part of you has an idea how the rest of the film will play out. However, that's where you'll be wrong.
Something happens in the second half that no person could have ever guessed and you find that this quirky, light-hearted comedy just took the hardest left of the year. From that point on, you cannot ungrasp your seat or unclench your jaw.
The performances are all very top-notch. Every character in this film feels like a real person, which is a crucial staple in making this narrative work. And the story plays out and unfolds brilliantly to where the film doesn't feel like "plot," but rather a story.
While this well-told story of class plays out, you find yourself floored by how brilliantly you were immersed. If you have the opportunity, see this film and you will have no regrets, but rather a deeper appreciation of the art of storytelling and how impactful it can be.
