Frozen 2

“You can’t just follow me into fire!”

Filmology Rating: 2.75 out of 4

Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leave Arendelle to travel to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land. They set out to find the origin of Elsa's powers in order to save their kingdom.

This is a very strange film and one that could be broken down more in the future. However, this is what happens when a sequel tries to replicate that "lightning in a bottle" from a previous film.

The most off-putting aspect of this film, almost right way, was the tone. That whimsical, slap-happy tone is gone. It's replaced with this impending, dour, and depressing tone- which leads to a very un-energetic pace.

The story itself is utterly useless, confusing, boggy, and boring. This entire film is so focused on the past and going back to uncover secrets of the past and it's so uninteresting because the film is so concerned with figuring out the past that it doesn't move forward in any way with the characters. This entire film is just wheel-spinning. By the end, you realize that we've gone in a complete circle and that nothing really happened at all.

The songs in this film also lean into that dour tone, which make them horribly forgettable and boring. One song in particular, with Kristoff, was God awful.

Kristoff is also utterly useless. He does nothing other than "tag along." Same with Olof who is now the most annoying character of the year. He just wouldn't shut up. This entire film is just "throw everything at the wall." It feels like a film that's meant to sell plush stuffed animals, toys, and make musicals off of. The film is so concerned about shoving cute animals and wacky slapstick with the snowman in your face that it completely forgot about coherent story and characters.

Now, on the plus side, the animation itself largely surpasses the first film. There is plenty of visual variety in that it's now Thanksgiving in Arendelle. It's not like Disney is trying to bank on a holiday that's nearby or anything.

Though the voice acting and visuals have surpassed the quality of the last film, there were very odd parallels to the film 'Annihilation' in the concept for this film. It was just very odd.
This entire film was just odd. The dark tone of it, the convoluted "story", the character choices, and songs were all just slightly off. However, I'm sure this film will make the kids be quiet for ninety minutes.
