Charlie’s Angels (2019)
/“Unseen. Undivided. Unstoppable.”
Filmology Rating: 2 out of 4
Charlie’s Angels is the latest film from Elizabeth Banks who directed 'Pitch Perfect 2', which was utter perfunctory. Now she's been given the creative freedom to write and direct the 'Charlie's Angels' reboot.
Most notably, this film stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Elizabeth Banks, and Patrick Stewart. When a rich business man's new piece of technology is at risk for being used as an explosive device, the Charlie's Angels are sent on the case.
Now this is a very odd film and, most of all, it's very poor action film. From a narrative perspective, there's this protagonist in the film you're meant to view this new world through and that's the character of Elena and she's utterly useless. She's meant to be sort of like how Miles Morales is in 'Into The Spider-Verse.' But she never steps into her own. She's always in the background and all the fun action is left to Kristen Stewart and Ella Balinska's characters. There just aren't any real characters in this film to care much for to the point where every character is perfect and can do anything at any time.
Then from an action perspective, it's shot very quick cutty and you never know what's going on to the point where the action scenes are confusing and banal. It really is a second-rate 'Kingsman' movie with a female focus.
It's also film where every man in the movie is either an idiot or the villain and every woman knows karate and some sort of martial arts and it really took away from my believability of what was happening in the film. There were just too many times where I had no idea what was going on. An action scene would start and you have no idea what's at stake, so you just don't care.
Ultimately it's barely serviceable with no characters and seemingly predictable plot. It feels like a film that belongs in the mid-2000s.
