"It's all a lie. Everything you've been told, everything you believe in."
Filmology Rating: 2.5 out of 4
All food wants is to be taken home with humans. They think that they are off to the promise land where only happy things occur…. boy are they wrong! Instead of a happiness, it turns out that they have been lied to all along and that they really get brutally murdered and then eaten. A few foods know the truth and it is up to them to help save everyone before it is too late.
WARNING: Sausage Party is by far one of the most rude, offensive, explicit, and outrageous movies that you will ever see. If you are easily offended, weirded out, or turned off by sexual humor, than this movie is definitely not for you! On the flip side, if you like these kinds of things, then Sausage Party will be a hilarious movie that will have you laughing throughout the film. Me personally, I am part of the group that gets a kick out of stuff like this so I thought this movie was a ton of fun.
One of the biggest things that Sausage Party has going for it is that it has fantastic writing. This film was brought to us by the same writers that gave us: This is The End, The Night Before, Neighbors 2, The Interview, and essentially any Seth Rogan movie in the last 4 years. Together, they really nailed an original script that has a lot to offer. Now I do have to give a little warning again…. It isn’t quite as side splitting as the trailer suggested. While Sausage Party does offer a lot of laughs, a lot of its humor is in the subtle details in the writing which brings me to my next point and the best part of the movie….
This entire film is one big satire about self-discovery, religion, politics, and countries that don’t get along. I never thought that an animated rated R movie about food would have so much depth to it! I was very pleasantly surprised with this though because it added a lot more than just laughs and focused on also having a good plot as well. The satirical aspect of the film was so simple and yet right on the money. It takes foods that either wouldn’t pair well in real life or foods that are typically found in the same isle and pins them against one another in a way that showed real life conflict well. I thought that the messages and themes of Sausage Party were spot on.
Now does this film have talented voice actors? Well how does Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek sound? That’s a whole lot of talent in one movie. I felt that the voice actors for each character fit very well alongside how the character was portrayed.
Now some of the jokes do get a little repetitive and the swearing was a little much but it doesn’t ruin the movie or anything. To me, it just felt like it was going for that shock and awe factor when it already clearly had it the first hundred swear words or raunchy references. Sausage Party will be a definite hit or miss with audiences; you'll either love it or you'll be really offended and hate it. I was one that had a great time with it and even when the jokes didn’t connect, I was able to find humor in the next few. If this movie sounds appealing and you don’t get offended easily, then I’d say see it and have a great time doing so!
