Kevin Hart and Ice Cube return in Ride Along 2, the sequel of the 2014 action comedy that first brought these two together. As his wedding day is just around the corner, Ben and his soon to be brother in law James, get assigned to a job that requires them to bring down a big time drug dealer in Miami. Ben, still trying to prove that he has what it takes to be a detective and a worthy man of James’s sister, gets dragged along with James to help uncover this drug smuggling ring. So to start off, I am a big fan of Kevin Hart. I think that he is hilarious and just has a natural comedic vibe that is very enjoyable to watch. Kevin and Ice are a good comedic duo that was shown in the first film. I think that these two have a dynamic that is very entertaining and fun to see. So yes there are a lot of funny moments in this film and a lot of them are just the funny banter between the two. They are accompanied by Olivia Munn and Ken Jeong who I feel were alright characters. You don’t really feel a connection to either one of them so they are just there for show and to say that they brought in a “bigger and better” cast for this sequel. I feel like this sequel was so quickly made and just thrown together. Only 2 years after the first film, this movie had nothing that separates itself from the first film as bigger or better. In fact, it very much feels like a rinse and repeat kind of thing. Kevin Hart is a clown, while Ice Cube is Ice cold. Kevin Hart is still trying to live up to his brother and prove his worth… That was the exact plot of the first film! We get it! Move past that and write a better script with a different theme and direction. The plot is very basic and won’t stand alone from all the other cop comedies that have come before it. If you liked the first Ride Along movie, then odds are you will like this one. Contrary to how this review looks, I did enjoy it! This movie is more or less senseless entertainment. All I’m saying is that this movie could have been a lot better if they would’ve focused less on trying to make it bigger and better and just focused on a better plot and better script.
