"People change. Greeks don't."
Filmology Rating: 1.75 out of 4
Almost 15 years after the original Big Fat Greek Wedding movie, Toula and Ian now are faced with a teenage daughter named Paris that is soon graduating and off to college. Paris feels overwhelmed with her big Greek family that seems to suffocate her every move and wants to go off to college somewhere far away. This is the last thing Toula wants. Adding to this stress, Toula and Ian have lost that spark over the years and are trying to rekindle the flame. Family being there 24/7 makes this task a little more difficult. On top of this, it turns out Toula’s parents actually were never married because the priest forgot to sign the marriage certificate 50 years ago. They then decide to get married officially now and some complications arise.
When I first heard that they were making another My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I was a little unsure about it. I really was a fan of the first one and I just didn’t want them to ruin the memory of it. Hollywood sometimes has a tendency to make sequels to movies when there really isn’t a need for it. However, this was not the case with this movie. I really did enjoy it and had a great time watching it!
Yes this movie blows things out of proportion. Yes things get over exaggerated sometimes. Yes there are some silly moments but these just add to what the movie is. It’s a movie about a goofy tight nit family that creates some chaos for one another. I think that it works really well with this family and it creates some very funny moments. It had some of the same goofy humor that was in the first movie and the classic Windex jokes were back as well.
Along with the humor, there are some good values that are taught along the way. A lot of the issues that this family deals with are very true in real life. How do you keep the flame sparked when you fall into the rhythm of having careers, being parents, and not focusing on continuing to “date” your significant other? How do you learn to let go of your child and let them make significant choices for themselves? This movie had simple plot points but each is very significant with good life lessons for everyone.
Really the only critic I have about this movie is might have tried to do a little too much with production wise. The first one only had a budget of 5 million dollars and grossed over 240 million worldwide (hollywoodreporter.com) This movie I felt tried to throw a little too much at this movie and I don’t think the bigger came across as better. I feel this sequel does the first one justice. Go see it for a few laughs and especially if you are a fan of the first one!
