"You were right to be afraid of the dark."

Filmology Rating: 3.13 out of 4

Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) had a rough childhood. When her father left her and her mother, her mother went off the deep end for a while. When her mother is in this stage of her life, unexplainable things seem to happen. Rebecca felt that an evil entity was inside her home as a child and yet nobody believed her. Years later after another tragic event, mom is once again not holding all together and gives way to this evil entity to come back. Now her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events. It is up to them to try and save their mother and get rid of this evil once and for all.

Lights Out is a very simple movie and yet it does quite a lot. It takes really a very simple thing, a demonic entity that can only get you in the dark, and makes an interesting film out of it. While this movie does have some definite flaws, it also has a lot of good. Being afraid of the dark is something that I feel most everyone can relate to. I know that I was afraid of the dark for a long time! This movie is one that will for sure stick with you and make you feel a little uneasy next time you are in the dark; that’s when you know that a movie is memorable! Lights Out is a movie that will stick with you even when you have left the theater.

So yes this movie has its faults but it doesn’t ruin the fun. These issues were things such as it breaks its own rules that the entity can’t travel in light, some bad lines, and one other big one. The big one to me is towards the end they know what kind of evil that they are dealing with and how to fight it and yet they are so unprepared for it that it is just ridiculous. The characters really were smart people and at times really brave and yet for some dumb reason, didn’t prepare nearly enough. This seemed a little unbelievable to me and made me frustrate but hey, it’s a horror movie…. People are never really that smart are they!?!

Overall this move was actually scary and got the job done. It took something very simple and a fear most people can relate to and brought it to life. It had some good acting (most of the time) and also some good sound effects throughout to really build the tension. If you enjoy horror movies then it’s worth checking out.
