"I loved you in The House Bunny."

Keanu, a story written by and starring Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele (Key and Peele comedy central), is a comedy about two friends posing as drug dealers to get back an adorable cat that got taken from them. These two guys being far from “gangsters”, it adds for some great moments. Really simple plot but it works! While this movie has a lot of good in it, it also has some things that could have been worked on.
First off, I have to say that I am a huge Key and Peele fan. I have been a fan of their show and their comedy skits for years now so I was really excited to when I found out they were making a full length movie. Now this being their first attempt at making a full length movie, I wasn’t expecting a perfect movie by any means. I was expecting it to be entertained and have a few laughs and that is exactly what I got.
One of the best things that this movie has for it is the comedic due of Key and Peele. For years now, they have been building chemistry together and this chemistry is explosive. Not very often do you find the two main actors that have worked together as long as they have and also have this sort of dynamic to them. Because of how believable this combo is, it really adds to the personality of the movie. These two guys are naturally funny and it just flows out from them into the script and the scenes. While I do have to admit that there weren’t quite as many side splitting moments as I would have liked from them, it still delivers many good jokes and funny moments.
Another thing that I liked is that this movie challenges social perspectives in a very funny but to the point way. This is something that these two have been doing for years in their skits and it came through again in this film. They turn social stereotypes on themselves in a way that is both fun and also not offensive. These two have mastered this form of riding the fence and it worked again for them. Now this movie is yes about saving a cat but it is more of a buddy film. Just how far will these two guys go for their best friend.
Now there were some things that felt off and that was the last 20 min or so. It turns very action heavy and I feel loses its relatability to the film. These two characters act in ways that you can relate to if you were in their given situation but it loses this for the final. While it is enjoyable to watch, it loses some of the real feel it had to it earlier in the movie. Also there will be some plot details that don’t add up towards the end but it shouldn’t really take too much off from the movie.
Overall, this was a very good first installment in the Key and Peele movie franchise. I really hope that they produce more in the future!
