"Never tell a soldier that he does not know the cost of war."
Filmology Rating: 3.33 out of 4
Complications arise when a lieutenant general (Alan Rickman), colonel (Helen Mirren), and drone pilot (Aaron Paul) are order to take out a building. Yes they are terrorists but one is an American citizen, one is a British citizen, and the blast radius would harm innocent bystanders. Is the drone strike worth it?
One of my favorite political/war/drama/thrillers I have ever seen. Eye in the Sky perfectly shows modern warfare and the complications morally and ethically that follow. With the new technological age that we live in, we don't even have to have face to face, person to person, gun on gun warfare anymore. A drone pilot can be in Las Vegas at an airbase thousands of miles away and has the power to end people’s lives with the touch of a button. With this new drone technology, it has sparked many debates as to whether or not it is ethical and morally right to do. I love to debate and this is an issue that I have debated in the classroom before and it’s a dozy. There are so many valid points for both sides of the spectrum and this was shown perfectly in the film.
Does for sure killing of only a few innocent people and a group of horrible people outweigh the possibility of not doing anything and the chance of a lot more people getting killed? Is one life valued the same as many? These are some extremely tough choices and ethical dilemmas that Eye in the Sky try and tackle. Possibly there is no right or wrong answer. It’s fighting one terrible situation with another terrible situation. This movie also showed the emotional struggle of the people who have to make the tough decisions of whether or not to pull the trigger and kill innocent lives to possibly save countless others. The emotions and heartbreak was spot on and portrayed through Aaron Paul (best work since Breaking Bad), Helen Mirren, and the late Alan Rickman (rest in peace Snape).
This also has to be one of the best slow building thrillers that I have ever seen as well. Once the suspense starts, it does not let go. It will have you on the edge of your seat waiting and wanting to see what happens next. The time flew by for me while watching this movie. I was so captivated and invested in the characters and trying to picture what I would do if I was in there shoes. You think you know what you would do but then another thing unfolds and then another and another until you aren’t really sure anymore. This is a sign of a good movie; a movie that really takes you on a journey and really makes you think and one that really puts you into the shoes of these characters. Lastly, it has one of the most intense endings I've ever seen for a war drama.
I honestly don't have anything really bad to say about this film which is a good thing! For what this movie is and what it tried to accomplish, it was brilliant. It’s a must see for anyone who likes a good drama, thriller, or someone who likes to be challenged when watching a film.
